A quick estimate before we visit

How to measure your rooms and stairs

You do not need a perfect scale drawing. A few clear measurements, a simple sketch and some photos are usually enough for us to give you an initial idea of cost.

Straight rooms

Measure the widest points

Measure the full room, not just the area you can see. Give us the exact wall-to-wall sizes, or add 10 cm and clearly tell us that you have added it.

1

Measure the longest length

Measure wall to wall at the room’s longest point, including into doorways, bays and alcoves.

2

Measure the widest width

Measure across the widest part of the room. Do not measure only the clear floor between furniture.

3

Draw a simple plan

Mark every measurement in metres or centimetres and show where the doors, fireplace and alcoves are. Tell us whether the sizes are exact or whether you have added 10 cm.

4

Bring a few photos

A photo from each end of the room helps us understand the shape and spot anything that needs checking.

Measuring stairs

Count the straight stairs and measure every winder

A clear photograph normally lets us understand the staircase shape. Please send us:

  • The total number of straight stairs
  • The measurement across one straight stair
  • Every measurement shown on each winder
  • Winders labelled in order: A, B, C, D and so on
  • The length and width of the landing or hallway
Please include photosTake one looking up and one looking down, making sure every turning or winder stair can be seen.

Use the arrows in this picture as your guide and measure each turning stair separately.
